2012 Newport Folk Festival Sells Out More Than Three Months in Advance

I’m a little late on this post, but the 2012 Newport Folk Festival has officially sold out with almost three months to go. Last year marked the first time the festival sold out in advance, and it did so only two weeks before the festival.

Newport Folk Festival tickets for Saturday sold out April 13th, and Sunday sold out five days later on the 18th. The only tickets that remain are for the Friday night show featuring Wilco.

So how did it sell out so quickly? I feel it’s due to the strong lineup and a push from social media.

The Newport Folk Festival is a non-profit organization that only has 10,000 people per day, which is very small for a summer festival. So most artists play the festival at a discount and make sacrifices to be a part of history. Jay Sweet and the festival organizers know their music. They were successful at booking relatively unknown acts this winter, and some of these bands’ stock have risen (Alabama Shakes and Of Monsters and Men). Landing headliner My Morning Jacket on Saturday is huge. They sold out Boston’s Bank of America Pavilion (capacity 5,000) last summer by themselves.

Over the last few years, the festival organizers have been making a huge social media push, making people aware of this historic festival. Concert goers and artists from all over the country (and world) want to go to the event and check it off their bucket list.

Congratulations to those who put a lot of time and effort into this festival. It should be a great weekend.
